BIZZNESS - Haute Couture

A Netflix Model for Haute Couture

Todd Heisler/The New York Times

Published: November 8, 2009

For many women, a $1,000 dress is something they admire in the pages of a glossy magazine or see draped on the frame of a celebrity — not an item hanging in their closet.

Through the mail-order service from Jennifer Carter Fleiss, above left, and Jennifer Hyman, a four-night dress rental costs $50 to $200.

But a nascent Web site called Rent the Runway is hoping to make high-end fashions much more accessible and almost as easy as renting a movie from Netflix.

The mail-order service, which finishes the testing phase on Monday, allows women to rent dresses from notable fashion designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, Hervé Léger and Proenza Schouler for roughly one-tenth of what they would cost to buy in a retail store.

The rentals run $50 to $200 for a four-night loan and are shipped directly to the customer’s doorstep. After wearing the dress, she puts it into a prepaid envelope and drops it in the mail. Dry cleaning is included in the price, but damage insurance costs $5, and in the case of outright destruction of the dress, the renter is responsible for the full retail price.

Rent the Runway is a recession-era twist on the Internet rent-by-mail model, which has been used for things like textbooks and video games in addition to movies. Unlike those utilitarian items, however, the dresses offer a touch of Cinderella — on a budget.

Julia Harris, a 27-year-old graduate student living in New York, turned to Rent the Runway when she needed something chic for a fall wedding. For $50, she got a fuchsia Catherine Malandrino number with an elaborately ruffled bust that would have cost $495 to buy.

“It was so easy. You just wear it and drop it back in the mail to them,” Ms. Harris said. “I don’t spend $2,000 on a dress regularly, so it’s nice to be able to wear some of the more expensive brands I wouldn’t be able to buy otherwise. And instead of just buying one or two dresses for this season, I can still have a lot of things to wear.”

Rent the Runway was founded by two recent Harvard Business School graduates, Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Carter Fleiss. Ms. Hyman said she got the idea for the service last year after watching her younger sister agonize over whether to buy an expensive new outfit to wear to a wedding.

“Here was this young girl who loves fashion and was willing to spend a good portion of her salary on a dress that she’s only going to wear once or twice, and I thought, there has to be a solution for this,” said Ms. Hyman.

The founders say that more than 20,000 women have signed up for the service, which has been shipping dresses for only a week. Bain Capital Ventures provided seed financing, which the company used to build its inventory of 160 styles.

Rent the Runway declined to discuss its business strategy, but it is clear the company faces several risks. Unlike DVDs, fashion changes quickly, and there is no guarantee that the company will be able to rent each dress enough times to cover its costs.

In addition, retail stores in major cities have offered dresses for rent for years. Rent the Runway is betting that its shop-by-Web convenience and the appeal of its top-quality fashions will persuade women across the country to rent a dress for a special occasion without trying it on beforehand.

The company has also chosen to make the service invitation-only, which gives it an air of exclusivity but may limit its audience.

Jeff Roster, an analyst with Gartner, said that execution would be critical. “If my movie doesn’t come on time, I might be mad, but life goes on,” he said. “But if my fancy dress for a big important event doesn’t arrive, that’s a customer service problem like you’ve never had before.”

Ms. Hyman and Ms. Carter Fleiss said they had taken several steps to guard against service fiascos. For starters, they use a reservation system to ensure that a customer can get a specific dress for the night she needs it.

To assist with fitting, they have on-call stylists who can advise customers on how certain materials feel and how a particular dress might hang on various body types. In addition, the site offers returns within 24 hours for any reason and will include an extra size of a first dress at no additional cost.

Customers who want to be extra-safe can choose a second style as a backup, for an additional $25. And all dresses come with a custom garment bag and a “fit kit,” which includes double-sided tape, bra strap adjusters and deodorant stain removers.

For fashion designers, the service is a creative marketing strategy and a way to reach a new generation of customers, said Ms. Hyman. “If someone wears a dress and absolutely loves it, she will go out and buy it,” she said.

Although most designers are selling their dresses directly to the service, some are providing exclusive runway pieces that are not commercially sold in exchange for a cut of the revenue.

Christian Siriano, a New York designer who was the winner in the fourth season of the “Project Runway” reality TV show, said Rent the Runway was a way to introduce his collection to a broader audience.

“Even though most people probably know who I am, they don’t know the brand yet,” he said. At a boutique, Mr. Siriano’s pieces can cost as much as $3,000. On Rent the Runway, his styles are offered for $150 to $200.

Those prices are especially appealing in a tough economy, said Karen Scheck, president of Lela Rose, a label whose fans include celebrities like Anne Hathaway.

“In challenging economic times, it’s important for brands to reach a larger audience and age demographic that you wouldn’t normally because of the price,” she said. “This is a great way to do it without jeopardizing the brand.”

The real test of the service will be the quality of its collection, said Samantha Durbin, editor of FabSugar.com, a fashion blog. “The key is to have really great products that are on trend,” she said. “No one wants to rent last season’s dress.”

RAVES & RANTS - C63AMG

Boy....was I wrong when I spotted the C63AMG after leaving the Panamera. The C63AMG is a Super SPORTS SALOON at a double choking 6.3 litres with a whopping 457hp though it don't look any different from the normal C class on the inside. Mercedez really beat the shit out of Porsche this time :)

RAVES & RANTS - PORSCHE PANAMERA

I wish I could share more pictures and insights to my luck in getting into one of the newly launched Panamera...but unfortunately I did not have my camera with me. As I doubt ourselves looking like any potential buyers of Porsches, I am sure the salesman who lugged us to unveil the Panamera under the covers hidden at the corner of the showroom in Naza probably couldn't wait to get his hands behind the wheel himself.

Here are some pictures of the new Porsche Panamera with only 20 units available in central Malaysia. Only in Shanghai did the gems got snapped up quickly.

There are some reviews online that spat on its ugliness, but to me it is the ultimate desirable man made machine with a combination of both sports car and saloon all in one, at a price tag of RM1.5 million! At choking 4.8 litres with a 400hp, the engine roars nicely at a step of a pedal. At a max speed of 175mph, one can probably reach Singapore in less than 2 hours without traffic.

In terms of driving comfort, the Panamera has extremely confortable seats for a sports car. One look behind the wheel and you feel yourself being in an airplane cockpit. The passengers seat are also made with ultimate luxurious feel with fully automatic rear seating system with folding center armrest and asymmetric split folding backrests. There are 8-way power seats (front) with electric adjustment of seat height, seat and backrest angle and fore/aft position with heaters. In addition to that, it has Park Assist and Active Suspension Management such as that of an aircraft which enables supreme driving over bumps. You can even manually control the car to suspend up and down! It has a 4 zone air condition system for all 4 seats and a Bose Surround Sound System. It also have a 3D navigation system at the dashboard.
Other than that, it really has too many buttons for me to figure out.
Really, could you get a saloon car with the need for speed all in one like this with any other car manufacturers? Some may think who needs a saloon when you want to do sports? and why sports when you want luxury saloon?
I think I do, but with the hefty price tag, who can afford?

RAVES AND RANTS- BOSE VS BANG AND OLUFSEN

BOSE VS BANG AND OLUFSEN

Well..personally I prefer the Bose and Bang just have this out of range prices...although having one of the Bose Wave System is another story.

I have earlier decided to buy a new JVC Hi-Fi which comes complete with subwoofers, USB plugins, Bluetooth, Multiple CDs and HDMI ready.

However when I first heard a Bose system in "the" Hi Fi shop, the demo just blew me away. Besides, I figured since I don't watch TV in my room I don't need a HDMI ready hi-fi nor would I listened to multiple CDs at the same time.

The downside of the Bose Wave Music system is that it has only one audio output and no USB plug in. Since my ultimate goal is to have a good sound system, I reckon I can do without all the stuff that comes with the JVC. Besides that, the Bose Wave is space saving.

The Bose Wave music system is a small unit only 106mm high, 368mm wide and 219mm deep and weighs in at 3.9kg. It comes in platinum or graphite grey. A credit card sized remote is supplied and functions well. Acoustic instruments and vocal are extremely sharp on CD although the built in radio stations can be not so clear at times.

BIZZNESS - Monday Stock Review

As reported in my blog earlier, I have preference on the some of the steel stocks. A few analyst gave the same reviews on the Edge and the Star recently. Further to this, KINSTEEL Bhd, Malaysia’s second- biggest steelmaker, rose to an eight-month high after Maybank Investment Bank Bhd raised its stock rating, saying demand will rebound as building construction gains momentum. By now, it gained almost 20% value since I recommended at RM0.80. For those that bought at the point I call, sell now at RM1.01!

Despite the high inventories built up by steel companies, it is reported that they are still short of to their payables. fowever, with the recovery, the high inventories will probably inflate the stock prices of steel companies.

“We have turned optimistic on the roll-out of domestic construction projects to effect a resurgence in long steel demand,” Maybank Investment said in a report today. “Stable selling prices suggest that inventory write-down are passé.”

According to the Malaysian Iron & Steel Industry Federation (MISIF) earlier ,domestic steel demand is projected to contract a further 25% this year, after falling 10.7% to 7.8 million tonnes in 2008.
Its president, Chow Chong Long, said consumption was expected to post a “recovery” in 2010 but “it would probably take a few years” for demand to be able to re-test its peak volume of 8.7 million tonnes achieved in 2007.

For Oil and Gas industry, I believe the oil industry will stay volatile even after a price rally towards US$70 a barrel last week, as it is still unclear if the rise is due to the broader economy or a new speculative play.

KNM appears the favourite among the oil and gas stocks still being one of the most actively traded stocks this morning with 31,944,800 shares traded while Shell remained as one of the top gainers.

"The population of this country is 50 million, right? If only 5 million of them were selected, it would take less than 20 years to make the country the wealthiest power in the world"

"Then what are you going to do with the rest of the 45 million people? Are you going to bulldoze them into the sea?"

LOST in Reality - Missing Air France Jet

PARIS, France (CNN) -- An Air France plane feared to have crashed in the Atlantic with 228 people aboard reported electrical problems in stormy weather before it lost contact, the airline said Monday, describing the loss as a "catastrophe."
The incident involves an Air France Airbus A330-200.

The incident involves an Air France Airbus A330-200.

The Airbus A330-200 sent an automatic message signaling an electric circuit failure as it hit turbulence early in its 11-hour flight from Rio de Janeiro to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told a news conference.

The last known contact with the plane was at 1:33 GMT Monday (8:33 p.m. Sunday ET), according to the Brazilian Air Force.

Brazil says it has launched two air force squadrons to hunt near the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha in the Atlantic Ocean, 365 kilometers (226 miles) from its coast, although the plane vanished outside the country's radar coverage.

A statement from the Brazilian Air Force said the jet was last logged flying at an altitude of 35,000 feet before contact was lost. When the plane failed to make further contact, Brazilian air controllers contacted their counterparts in Senegal.

France's ambassador to Senegal told CNN affiliate BFMTV that French military aircraft had been dispatched to search the west African country's coast.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed his "very deep concern" and asked the government "to implement every effort to find the plane," according to a statement from his office.

Agence France-Presse quoted France's Environment Minister Jean Louis Borloo saying that it was extremely unlikely the plane had been hijacked.

Flight AF 447, took off at 2230 GMT Sunday (6 p.m. ET). It was carrying 126 men, 82 women, seven children and a baby, in addition to the crew, Air France said.

"I can say without doubt that this is a catastrophe," Gourgeon said, adding "the entire Air France company and its staff are very moved and affected by this."

There has been speculation it was struck by lightning, but that should not bring down a modern airliner, former Airbus pilot John Wiley told CNN.

Somber members of the families could be seen entering a special terminal set aside for them at Charles de Gaulle airport.

A crisis center was being set up at at the airport to deal with anxious relatives and friends waiting for news of passengers. Air France has also set up a hotline: 0800 800 812 in France, or +33 157021055 for international callers.

Airbus has opened a crisis room and their flight safety team is in place, a company spokesperson told CNN. Airbus is working closely with authorities and Air France, he said, declining to comment further.

Gourgeon said the aircraft involved was a new Airbus piloted by a "particularly experienced crew."

Analyst Kieran Daly of online aviation news service Air Transport Intelligence told CNN that the lack of communication with the aircraft "does suggest it was something serious and catastrophic."

He said the aircraft involved is believed to be one delivered to Air France in April 2005. Video Watch aviation expert describe possible scenarios »

"It is an extremely young fleet by aviation standards," he said. "The A330 is state-of-the-art with extremely reliable engines made by General Electric."

CNN air travel expert Richard Quest says the twin-engined plane, a stalwart of trans-Atlantic routes, has an impeccable safety record.

"It has very good range, and is extremely popular with airlines because of its versatility," he said.
